Trends in the Levels of Atmospheric Pollutants in Vitinya Region
M. Doncheva-Boneva, G. Kadinov
Abstract: The present paper studies the change in the levels of atmospheric pollutants-sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and ozone in the Vitinya pass for the period 2006 – 2012. An assessment of the possible effects of atmospheric pollutants on vegetation is also included.
It was found that sulphur and nitrogen oxides show lasting downtrend and do not exceed critical levels determined for the protection of vegetation. High concentrations of ozone have negative impact, being specified that in 2007 and 2011 the results exceed the target value for the protection of vegetation in terms of cumulative exposure over a threshold ozone concentration of 40 ppb (AOT 40).
Keywords: air pollution; critical levels; impact on plants; nitrogen oxides; ozone AOT 40; sulphur dioxide
