Suitability of Vertisols from the Western Part of the Sofia Fields for Growing Agricultural Crops
I. Lyubenova, V. Krasteva, V. Stefanova
Abstract: Vertisols cover significant areas of the fields around Sofia. A review is made of the Vertisols around the region of Bozhurishte. A soil map is presented showing their coverage. Main physical and chemical properties of these soils are also presented. Through application of officially used “Methods for work on the agricultural land cadastre in Bulgaria” field ratings are calculated, the lands are categorized and the most suitable crops for growing in the region are recommended. The suitability of the Vertisols from the Bozurishte region for growing agricultural crops is as follows in descending order: from the grain crops: wheat and corn; from the technical crops: sugar beet; from the permanent crops: plums, raspberries, apples, pears; from the forage crops: meadows and pasture-grounds, alfalfa.
